Value Addition. The missing link in Uganda’s Agricultural Produce industry

  • The cost of a basin of tomatoes during harvest season at the farm gate is equivalent to two bottles of tomato sauce, which are less than 300mls in size each.
  • The cost of a kilo of poorly handled mukene (silver fish) at the shores of Lake Victoria is equivalent to the cost of less than 200 grams of supermarket-grade packed mukene.

Genetically Modified Foods could be a Trap for Africa

Genetically Modified Foods could be a Trap for Africa

There has been a big push once again by capitalists from Developed countries trying to convince Africans to migrate from the organic bred crops to the Genetically Modified (GM) ones. All sorts of sweeteners are being used like ending global hunger, massively increasing on production to feed the huge populations, resisting diseases in plants among others. The reality for now seems to be that while GM crops may be ideal for the West (Something am not too sure about), they aren’t yet what Africa needs. I believe we haven’t yet exhausted the potential that lies in our current crop species and their respective varieties and thus we have to go slow on this. I share my views in this article.
